Decay

Beautiful vestiges of the past call me to accept decay and death as a vital part of life.

My prayer

Eternal One, For the vital beauty that existed, I give thanks. As I experience it vanishing, help me to grieve its loss without missing the beauty that is still present.

Biblical touchstones

  • Be gracious to me, O LORD, for I am in distress; my eye wastes away from grief, my soul and body also. Psalm 31:9
  • Job said, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return there; the LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.” Job 1:21
  • For the fate of humans and the fate of animals is the same; as one dies, so dies the other. Ecclesiastes 3:19

Invitation to prayer

Search your heart for a place of grief. Feel its power. Listen for its messages. Become aware of where else it is present  in your body.

What prayers are emerging in  your heart, mind, body and imagination?

Pray them now.
