Notre Dame de la Belle Verrière (11): Mary’s Veil

There is a piece of cloth at Chartres that Mary may have worn at the Annunciation and/or birth of Jesus. When I am near it, I feel close to Christ.

My Prayer:

Jesus, Thank you for the simple and profound beauty of your mother’s touch, including the touch of her clothes.*  Thank You that you weren’t afraid to touch others–and how that touch brought wholeness.

*Note how Mary’s veil covers the top of her head and shoulders and how it touches Jesus’ halo.

Scriptural Touchstones:

When Jesus had come down from the mountain, great crowds followed him; and there was a leper who came to him and knelt before him, saying, “Lord, if you choose, you can make me clean.” Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, “I do choose. Be made clean!” Immediately his leprosy was cleansed. Matthew 8:1-3

When Jesus entered Peter’s house, he saw his mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever;  15 he touched her hand, and the fever left her, and she got up… Matthew 8:14

As Jesus went on, two blind men followed him, crying loudly, “Have mercy on us, Son of David!” When he entered the house, the blind men came to him; and Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” They said to him, “Yes, Lord.” Then he touched their eyes and said, “According to your faith let it be done to you.” And their eyes were opened. Matthew 9: 27-30 (All are from the NRSV)

Invitation to Prayer:

The Veil of Mary at Chartres by Jill K H Geoffrion

Imagine yourself sitting before the Veil of Mary at Chartres Cathedral. Take three deep breaths as you quiet your heart. Gaze at the ancient fabric while you think about how Mary loved her child and how Jesus loved his mother. What prayers are emerging in your body, imagination, mind and heart? Pray them now.
